You’ll hear from a lot of politicians this year about property-tax relief. What you won’t hear so much is that out-of-state corporations are already getting plenty of tax breaks. Giant data centers are receiving equally giant “abatements” that total more than a billion dollars a year–and the sum is only getting larger, even as the strain on our water and electrical infrastructure gets worse.
And who picks up the slack? Who has to pay more to make up for giant corporations paying less? You do.
If elected, I will work to curtail abatements and make data centers pay their fair share. The additional revenue will significantly ease strains on state and local budgets, making property-tax relief easier. I am by no means an anti-data-center absolutist, but I believe that corporations with revenue upwards of a hundred billion a year can easily afford to shoulder more of the burden.
