The U.S. medical system is in dire need of reform. All too many people are afraid of financial ruin just from going to the doctor, and all too many people are going without the care they desperately need. The state legislature can’t fix the problem all on its own, but it can take a step in the right direction by expanding Medicaid in Texas. Forty states have already taken that step, including several like Oklahoma and Kentucky that are heavily Republican. We should join them.
This may seem like a modest reform, but it will make medical care more accessible for a lot of hard-working people who are struggling just to get by. It will also boost the economy by making it easier for chronically ill people to get the help they need to rejoin the workforce.
Unlike some other issues, I believe there is real potential for bipartisan cooperation here. If elected, I will urge Republican legislators to do the right thing by following the example of their colleagues in other states.
